Because the /5 has drum type brakes both front and rear, and the newer /6 and /7 BMWs used disc type front braking, very few drum type wheels exist.I have been lucky and located a set for my "new" old /5.
The advantages of using these wheels are:
a.> They stay true and round.
b.> Both wheels are 18" so only one spare tube need be carried when touring.
c.> Easy to chain the bike to lock it to something solid, and no wheel damage when you do.
d.> Correct for the era of bike as they were a very desireable option offered by some dealerships when the bike was delivered new.
e.> I think they look very cool.
I was going to need to replace the tires on the /5 in a few thousand miles anyway, so am lucky to have found these when I did.
